Lighting Suggestions That Can Effect the Interior of Your Home

April 8, 2022

The lighting you choose can greatly affect a space. With careful lighting choices, you can tap into a room’s potential. Poor lighting choices, however, can really downplay the beauty of a room and even make it unappealing. Lighting is also a great way to express your personal style and taste. Let’s look at some lighting suggestions that can enhance the look and feel of my home. How lighting can affect the look of my home and wellbeing.

Create the Illusion of Space

You can manipulate the illusion of space with both natural and artificial lighting. We have all experienced how a dark room feels smaller, while a bright room feels bigger. This is the illusion of space. You can increase natural light by using sheer drapes or minimal window coverings.

For rooms that do not provide a lot of natural light, you can increase the lighting in the room with additional wall scones, corner lamps, and bright, bold, centrally located hanging lights.

Create the Tone

Your lighting choices in a room will affect the tone that the room has. Different rooms should have different tones of lighting. The tone of the lighting will depend on the purpose of the room. Kitchens need bold, bright lighting for cooking and cleaning tasks, while hallways can get by with soft, understated mood lights. This concept applies to all of the rooms in your home.

Create Comfortable Reflections and Shadows

You will also want to consider the reflections and shadows that your light choices create. These are often overlooked aspects of a lighting scheme.

Create Focal Points

You can also use your lighting choices to create focal points in a room. For instance, recessed lighting under cabinets can highlight these parts of your home’s craftsmanship. Lighting can also be used to draw attention to certain things that are of great value to you, for instance, certain pieces of art.

Create Safe Spaces

On a practical note, lighting can affect the look of your home and wellbeing by contributing to or diminishing the safety of your home as well. Spaces within your home with poor lighting can become a hazard. This is especially true for spaces already considered dangerous, such as stairways or step-downs. Be sure you employ sufficient lighting to keep your family and guests safe when navigating your home

This also applies to outdoor lighting, and is perhaps even more important outside on dark nights.
