How to Review Accessibility at Your Business

Updated 1 min read

A building remodel can improve physical access, but it cannot establish that every part of a business complies with the ADA. Operations, communication and customer policies also matter.

Start with Physical Barriers

Walk the property with the project’s design professionals. Discuss the route from arrival to entrance, then doors, service areas and restrooms. Record the proposed improvements and identify any required formal review.

Review Business Practices Separately

Staff procedures and communication need their own attention. Use the Department of Justice’s business guidance to understand the areas a business should review. Seek qualified advice for questions about your particular obligations.

Keep Responsibility Clear

The owner, design professionals, construction team and any required accessibility reviewer have different roles. Confirm who will address each concern and which inspections are needed. A contractor’s site visit is not a legal certification of compliance.
